Healing, Wellness and Innovation Through the Arts
Geisinger Health Systems 100th Anniversary Celebration

A mural, put together by 19 local artist, was unveiled on  September 7, 2015. It is located in the "Hospital for Advanced Medicine", filling a large space in the "Atrium Café". The pieces will include paintings, clay works, fiber art, metal works and fused glass.

Given a theme of "Innovation, Healing and Wellness", Becky Marks decided to use a 3 molecule model for her  interpretation, which is titled "Molecular Representation" .

The molecules are composed of numerous circles of fused glass and are separated by color and subject. The pieces being displayed at various depths, shadowed and drawn on with frit (powered glass) and the use of dichroic glass are all meant to add dimension to this piece.

The Traveling, Glass, Underground Railroad Quilt

"Marks on Glass" participated by adding a glass square to the 15 piece glass quilt put together by The Glass Artisans Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

The glass quilt will be used for educational purposes. It will be called the traveling quilt. The entire project is put together within a wooden frame and can be rolled about on wheels.

First stop and presentation of the
"History of the Freedom Quilts in Glass Art" exhibit

Article from "The Times-Tribune" January 17, 2015:

When runaway slaves fled the south through Northeast Pennsylvania, abolitionists displayed coded messages on quilts to guide them to safe houses.

“The Underground Railroad was a fairly big story in Pennsylvania, but the history of it was never really told,” said Pedro Anes, an educational consultant for the Glass Artisans Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

A project to tell that story through glass panel replicas of quilts from the Underground Railroad is one of 27 recipients of small arts and culture grants totaling $55,000, which the Lackawanna County commissioners announced this week. The project will culminate in presentations and lectures next month at the Bethel AME Church in Scranton and the University of Scranton.
